At a time when most of the tennis players are struggling with injuries, Federer is playing some of the best tennis ever. While wishes are pouring in from all corners on Federer’s 37th birthday, one interesting stat about the tennis marvel which his fans might not be aware of – is the fact that he was once made to clean toilets for a week as a part of a punishment.
One of the most respected figures in the tennis fraternity currently, Federer is also known for his calm-headed attitude on court – where he remains to be an idol for youngsters across the globe. But during his early days, Federer was known to be an aggressive teenager and he was even made to clean toilets for a week after smashing his racquet to rip a courtside curtain in Biel –Switzerland’s national tennis centre.
Federer, in his teens, was nowhere close to what he is now. While he threw his racquet every now and then, his coaches had a tough time dealing with his temperament. It was in the year 1997 that Federer started to make the right noises by earning praise from all corners with a stupendous show in the junior tennis world.
Today, a teenager who was temperamental still continues to show glimpses of his aggression on the court – but he has channelised the energy in the right direction to entertain tennis fans across the globe with some breathtaking tennis. Federer currently has 20 Grand Slam titles to his name – the most by any male tennis player.
While he has won eight titles at Wimbledon – the most prestigious of the four Grand Slams, he has won Australian Open on six occasions and US Open five times. Federer has won the French Open just once as Rafael Nadal has dominated on clay like no other tennis player. Federer is married to Mirka, who was a tennis pro from Switzerland when the two met in 2009. The couple married the same year and have four children – Myla, Charlene, Lenny and Leo.
In order to ensure that he continues to play tennis – a sport he loves so much, Federer has been picking and choosing tournaments. He was knocked out in Wimbledon 2018 by South Africa’s Kevin Anderson, who defeated him 2-6, 6-7 (5/7), 7-5, 6-4 in the quarter-final. Federer has also pulled out of the upcoming Rogers Cup. Federer had earlier pulled out of French Open 2018 to be in the best possible shape for the Wimbledon.
